KRG backs Turkey peace bid, eyes stability
Kurdistan Regional Government leaders said on Wednesday they back Turkey’s peace initiative and expect it to reduce regional violence. Safeen Dizayee told guests at Erbil’s Turkish National Day event that President Masoud Barzani and the prime minister want the negotiations to succeed.
The foreign relations chief said Iraq’s parliamentary campaign ahead of the November 11 voting has avoided conflict. He wants transparent results that yield a federal cabinet that respects constitutional commitments to Kurdish authorities.
Turkey’s pro-Kurdish party announced on Monday that militants completed their withdrawal from Turkish territory. The move follows a year of indirect discussions with jailed Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Trade between Kurdistan and Turkey continues to expand, with many Turkish firms working across the autonomous region. About 21 million Iraqis can vote for 329 parliament seats next month under rules adopted after the 2019 protests changed the electoral system.
