Lawyer, estate agent flee after defrauding buyer of US$14,000

A Harare lawyer and estate agent are on the run after allegedly defrauding a home seeker of US$14,000 in a property deal. Cosma Mazambara was tricked into buying a commercial stand in Highfield by a group including lawyer Proud Fambisai Mutuso, estate agent Jacob Mugugu, and businessman Regis Jonas Maguva.

Maguva appeared in court and was granted bail, but Mutuso and Mugugu remain at large. The fraud took place in 2023 when Mazambara was looking for a commercial stand. Mugugu introduced him to Maguva, who falsely claimed to be selling stand number 8641 in Highfield.

Mazambara paid US$14,000 to Mutuso, who was supposed to hold the money until the ownership transfer was complete. However, when Mazambara contacted Mutuso later, he became unresponsive. Investigations showed that the stand was not for sale and was reserved for a police post by the Harare City Council.
