Leftist parties reject Bangladesh’s July Charter over missing independence history
Five political parties, including Gonoforum and four leftist groups, have refused to sign the National Consensus Commission’s July Charter unless changes are made. The leftist parties are Communist Party of Bangladesh, Basod, Bangladesh JSD, and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist). Gonoforum stated they would not sign unless the Declaration of Independence by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Proclamation of Independence by the Mujibnagar Government are included in the charter.
Basod’s general secretary, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, argued that the charter does not reflect the history of the Liberation War. The parties also disagreed with certain clauses, including one that prevented legal challenges to the charter.
