Leh administration defends Sonam Wangchuk’s NSA detention in Supreme Court
The Leh administration has defended the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court. The administration stated that the detention, ordered on September 26, was lawful and based on activities harmful to state security, public order, and essential services.
Leh District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk confirmed that the order was made after careful consideration of all relevant material. The administration rejected allegations of improper treatment and claimed that Wangchuk’s detention followed constitutional safeguards. It also highlighted that Wangchuk’s family was informed promptly and the detention grounds were communicated within the required five-day period.
The affidavit emphasized that Wangchuk did not file a representation against the detention, and procedures under the NSA were fully complied with. The case will be heard by the Supreme Court’s 2-judge bench on Wednesday.
