Madagascar’s Randrianirina sworn in after coup

Colonel Michael Randrianirina became Madagascar’s new president on Friday. This happened after the military took control of the country earlier this week. They took action after protests led by young people forced President Andry Rajoelina to leave. The African Union and the United Nations have criticized the takeover.

Randrianirina promised to carry out his duties as president with full responsibility. He said he would work hard to protect unity and human rights. The military has removed all government bodies except the lower house of parliament. They plan to rule with a transitional government for two years before holding new elections.
