Madhya Pradesh tops mining index, Rajasthan leads
The Ministry of Mines released the State Mining Readiness Index (SMRI) and rankings on Thursday to encourage reforms in the mining sector, aligning with the Union Budget 2025-26 goals. States were ranked in three categories based on their mineral resources. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat topped Category A, while Goa, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam ranked high in Category B. Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Tripura were the top states in Category C.
The SMRI evaluates states based on auction performance, early mine operationalization, and sustainable mining practices for non-coal minerals. Rajasthan recently became the first state to auction major mineral blocks, aiming to boost mining operations and create jobs.
In related news, Coal PSUs announced a performance-linked reward of Rs 1,03,000 for 2.1 lakh non-executive workers. President Droupadi Murmu emphasized India’s need for self-reliance in rare earth elements (REEs) for national security and technological advancement.
