Malaysia reopens labor market to Bangladeshi workers with strict conditions

Bangladesh has rejected numerous preconditions attached to Malaysia’s reopening of employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers, according to Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Adviser Asif Nazrul. The requirements mandate recruiting agencies possess five years of operational history, demonstrate records of placing 3,000 workers across at least three nations, maintain 10,000 square feet of office space, and operate dedicated training facilities. Agencies must also present recommendation letters from five international employers and hold valid licenses with good conduct certificates.

Nazrul expressed concern that such strict standards would enable syndicate formation by limiting market access to a small number of agencies. He emphasized Bangladesh’s preference for competitive and open labor markets while announcing continued negotiations with Malaysian officials. Dhaka has already communicated its objections and seeks more favorable arrangements.

The adviser also launched an Overseas Employment Platform designed to enhance recruitment transparency and protect workers from exploitation during ongoing bilateral discussions.
