Man declared dead found alive in Pirin

A Bulgarian man legally declared deceased in 2020 has resurfaced after living as a wilderness recluse in Pirin National Park for over a decade. Boyan Ivanov vanished from his village home in 2013 while facing debt collectors and creditors, prompting his elderly mother to launch unsuccessful searches before obtaining a court-issued death certificate seven years later.

Former municipal officials indicated that Ivanov disappeared following threats from loan recovery agents who damaged his vehicle, with neighbors reporting suspicious cars circling the property. Authorities detained the 62-year-old last week near Bansko after discovering him camping in protected mountain terrain, though he subsequently left the area before reuniting with relatives.

Legal proceedings have commenced to revoke the death certification and restore his civil status through witness testimony and potential DNA verification. Prosecutors confirmed that his voluntary absence constitutes no criminal violation, as many indebted individuals relocate domestically or internationally to escape financial obligations.
