Mandalay earthquake devastation prompts Nay Pyi Taw road repairs
Nay Pyi Taw’s mayor U Than Tun Oo toured earthquake reconstruction sites across three townships on Friday, examining progress on infrastructure repairs seven months after a devastating tremor struck central Myanmar. His inspection covered road resurfacing, pedestrian pathways, median strips and greenery installations in Zabuthiri, Dakkhinathiri and Lewe townships.
The March 28 Mandalay earthquake killed 3,795 people while leaving 86 hurt and 5,104 missing, government statistics show. Infrastructure losses proved catastrophic across the region. More than 51,000 homes collapsed alongside 3,310 public facilities. The disaster leveled 725 medical centers, destroyed 5,611 worship sites and damaged 403 roadways. Rail networks suffered extensive harm, with 56 lines and 27 stations affected. The Yangon-Mandalay highway sustained damage at 284 points.
Utilities and religious structures bore heavy tolls. Communication networks lost 10 towers while energy systems saw 10 transmission structures fall and 3,123 streetlights topple. Water management systems endured severe disruption with six dams compromised, 594 irrigation channels wrecked and 174 supply points damaged. Buddhist monuments sustained widespread destruction as 6,424 pagodas and temples crumbled during the seismic event.
