Marinov warns of constitution breaches

Professor Alexander Marinov, a sociologist and former presidential strategic council chairman, has criticized what he characterized as systematic constitutional violations in Bulgaria following a Constitutional Court ruling on President Rumen Radev’s referendum proposal regarding euro adoption. Speaking on Bulgarian National Radio, Marinov argued that the country disregards fundamental legal principles rather than properly amending its constitution, and he suggested some judges may have timed their decision to avoid political fallout.

The academic called for Associate Professor Natalia Kiselova’s resignation and lamented that citizens were never consulted about EU or NATO membership. Marinov described Bulgaria as drifting toward non-democracy by preventing popular sovereignty, though he noted Radev emerged vindicated from the constitutional dispute. He identified the president as the sole viable political alternative but warned that building effective opposition requires assembling a substantial team of credible figures, as many qualified individuals currently avoid politics while opportunists gravitate toward promising movements.
