Mark Hamill raises concerns over AI actors, ethics in Hollywood
Mark Hamill, the Hollywood legend who’s been in the game for nearly 50 years, has serious doubts about the rise of “AI actors” in film. In a recent interview, he raised chilling questions about the ethical implications of AI recreating actors after their death.
Referring to the AI actress Tilly Norwood, Hamill wondered if his family would be approached posthumously for his likeness, asking, “Would Gene Kelly have wanted to shill for a vacuum cleaner?” He pointed to these “too many unanswered questions” surrounding AI in cinema.
On a different note, Hamill also opened up about his role in The Life of Chuck, a major shift from his iconic Luke Skywalker. In the film, he plays an aging accountant, moving away from his action-hero persona, showing off his range in a story exploring memory and mortality.
And if you think Hamill’s life is an open book, think again. During the making of The Empire Strikes Back, he kept one of Hollywood’s biggest secrets—the reveal that Darth Vader is Luke’s father. He kept it so well that even Harrison Ford didn’t know until the premiere.
