MediaTek to manufacture chips in India as market grows
Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, one of the world’s top semiconductor suppliers, has expressed interest in manufacturing chips in India once local fabrication facilities are up and running. Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India, emphasized that the company sees strong business sense in local production, as it would shorten supply chains, cut costs, and improve resilience against global disruptions.
MediaTek, which designs chips for major smartphone brands like Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo, operates a fabless model, outsourcing chip manufacturing to foundries like TSMC, Intel, and GlobalFoundries. This move aligns with India’s ambition to become a semiconductor manufacturing hub, supported by a $10 billion government incentive package.
India’s semiconductor market is projected to grow significantly, from $38 billion in 2023 to $100 billion by 2030. MediaTek is also pushing forward with AI technology, unveiling the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset, designed to elevate flagship 5G smartphones with superior AI, gaming, and energy efficiency.
