Mekong MoU drug control meeting held in Yangon
The Senior Officials Committee (SOC) Meeting of the Mekong MOU on Drug Control took place at Chatrium Hotel in Yangon yesterday. Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw highlighted the importance of the Mekong MOU, signed in 1993, in fighting drug production, trafficking, and consumption in the region. Member countries have implemented various measures, such as drug addiction treatment, poppy eradication, and joint operations.
He noted the rising concern of synthetic drugs like “Happy Water” and ongoing arrests. The deputy minister mentioned 40 special operations from 2013 to 2024 and the involvement of ethnic armed groups in drug trafficking. He emphasized the need for information exchange among member states to capture offenders.
The meeting also discussed subregional projects, financial issues, and plans for 2025-2026. The delegates reviewed and approved 13 action plans, and the meeting will continue on 17 October.
