Melissa kills seven, Cuba braces next strike
Hurricane Melissa claimed seven lives across Caribbean nations before advancing toward Cuba on Wednesday. The storm killed three people in Jamaica, three in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic as weather conditions worsened throughout the region.
The hurricane battered Jamaica with Category 5 winds before weakening to Category 3 as it crossed land. Wind speeds intensified back to Category 4 after the system moved over open water and continued northwest toward Cuban territory.
Jamaica’s climate change minister described the damage as catastrophic, with flooding affecting residential areas while public infrastructure and medical facilities sustained severe harm. Approximately 25,000 tourists remained on the island nation, known for its clear coastal waters.
Scientists attribute the storm’s intensity to human-caused climate change, which strengthens hurricanes and increases flooding risks. The system moved slowly over Jamaica, prolonging rainfall and heightening destruction. United Nations officials plan to airlift 2,000 relief kits from storage facilities in Barbados once flights resume.
