Mira blasts Baghdad over Kurdish pay cuts

A European youth organization leader urged global recognition of the Kurdish genocide and called for education-based prevention efforts at a genocide conference in Duhok. Javier Hurtado Mira, who chairs the Democrat Youth Community of Europe, addressed academics and officials attending the fifth annual gathering at the University of Duhok.

Mira said annual conferences help prevent future atrocities through international cooperation and knowledge sharing. He compared the Kurdish experience to other historical genocides and emphasized that academic partnerships with United Nations support offer the best protection against repeated violence.

The Spanish activist criticized Baghdad’s salary cuts to Kurdish civil servants as economic discrimination. He argued that withholding wages from government workers undermines constitutional rights and damages trust between Iraqi authorities and Kurdish citizens.

Mira praised young Kurds for their readiness to build peaceful societies through education and civic engagement. The conference examined the Anfal Campaign that killed more than 182,000 Kurds between 1987 and 1988.
