SDF hands Damascus list for army merger
Syrian Democratic Forces gave American-led coalition officials a roster of about 70 senior officers who could join Syria’s national military command, according to North Press. The names cover commanders from three regional divisions and special units, with proposals suggesting SDF leaders might fill 30 percent of General Staff positions.
SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi said his troops will integrate into Syria’s emerging army while maintaining counterterrorism partnerships with Western forces. Talks between SDF delegates and Damascus officials continue as both sides work through merger details.
General Command member Sipan Hemo said on Wednesday, October 10, 2025, that any integration must preserve the SDF’s identity and principles developed over the years of combat. He rejected attempts to dissolve or marginalize the force, stating that genuine national military structures require SDF participation and respect for all Syrian ethnic and religious groups.
Hemo pointed to Afrin as a test of the government’s sincerity, demanding justice for displaced residents before meaningful unity can advance. The SDF has fought alongside coalition partners against ISIS since 2015.
