Modi hails Jayaprakash Narayan, recalls Emergency revolt
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Jayaprakash Narayan, or JP, on his birth anniversary Saturday, calling him a fearless voice and a champion of democracy. Born on Oct. 11, 1902, JP is remembered for leading the mid-1970s movement against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and demanding “Sampoorna Kranti,” or Total Revolution. Modi shared a video on X, highlighting how JP’s efforts empowered citizens, promoted constitutional values, and inspired mass movements that shook the Congress government.
JP’s campaign led to the 1975 Emergency, during which he was jailed and wrote about his faith in democracy. He pushed for justice, equality, and morality in public life, and famously drew a crowd of 100,000 at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. JP died on Oct. 8, 1979, in Patna, days before his 77th birthday.
