Modi launches Rs 11,440 crore pulses mission for self-sufficiency

On Saturday, PM Modi launched the “Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses,” a bold Rs 11,440 crore project aimed at boosting India’s pulses production to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030. With a target of expanding cultivation to 310 lakh hectares, nearly 2 crore farmers will benefit from guaranteed procurement, quality seeds, and better value chain support.

Despite impressive growth in pulses production, India still imports a massive 47 lakh tonnes of pulses, underlining the need for more self-reliance. The mission, part of the Union Budget 2025-26, is a step toward reducing imports and meeting the nation’s rising demand.

Beyond its economic significance, pulses are crucial for nutrition, providing 20-25% of protein in Indian diets. This mission is about both economic strength and better health for millions.
