Myanmar explores high-grade cotton imports from India, Uzbekistan
Myanmar is advancing its initiative to import high-grade cotton varieties, with a recent virtual meeting focusing on the Suvin strain from India. Officials from MyanTrade and the Myanmar Cotton and Cotton Products Merchants Association coordinated on drafting a memorandum of understanding and estimating import costs for on-farm trials. The association is also engaged with Uzbekistan, which has prepared to supply pest-free, high-yielding cotton varieties.
The merchants’ association emphasized the significant price difference between premium and non-premium cotton, urging growers to adopt superior pedigree varieties for commercial benefit. It warned that neglecting seed consistency and processing quality could lead to low yields and wasted resources, potentially harming the entire cotton-based industry. The group pledged to help growers access these high-yielding varieties and secure favorable prices.
