Myanmar major bags ASEAN engineering crown

Major Pyae Phyo Maung of Myanmar’s Ministry of Defence received the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award in the Individual Category at the 43rd ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) Conference and Engineering Conference in Mabalacat City, Pampanga, Philippines, held from October 28 to 30.

The event brought together engineering officials and experts from all 10 ASEAN member states, as well as representatives from global and regional engineering bodies. During the conference dinner on October 30, AFEO leadership presented several honors, including the award to Major Pyae Phyo Maung. He was recognized for merging modern and traditional techniques to construct the world’s largest seated Buddha image, the Maravijaya Buddha, and for using composite technology to restore historic temples and structures damaged in the Mandalay earthquake.

The Myanmar Federation of Engineering Organizations nominated him for the award, which underwent review at the AFEO Midterm Meeting in Da Nang, Vietnam, and final approval by the Governing Board. Major Pyae Phyo Maung has also earned international acclaim through achievements at events like the Composite World Cup.
