Myanmar nabs 53 in border scam purge
Myanmar authorities have detained 53 foreign nationals who entered the country illegally through border routes, including via Thailand, and participated in online gambling and fraud operations in the Myawady-Maehtawthalay (KK Park) area of Kayin State. An additional 148 foreign nationals from eight countries underwent screening as part of ongoing investigations. Joint teams are gathering their personal details under the supervision of Deputy Director-General U Myint Bhone of the Ministry of Immigration and Population in Kayin State to facilitate swift repatriation.
Between January 30 and October 31, 2025, a total of 10,744 foreign nationals were detained for illegal entry and screened. Of these, 9,365 have already been repatriated through Thailand in accordance with legal procedures, while 1,379 others await return and are being held in proper custody.
The government is coordinating with neighboring countries, regional partners, and international organizations to dismantle online scam operations, apprehend perpetrators, including foreign ringleaders, and assist victims of trafficking or those in distress by arranging their prompt and safe repatriation.
