Myanmar arrests filmmakers over election posts

The government has enacted the Law on the Prevention of Obstruction, Disruption, and Sabotage of Multiparty Democratic General Election, effective July 29, 2025, as part of preparations for the December 28, 2025, general election. Authorities are taking legal action against those who violate this law.

On October 29, 2025, directors Thet Lwin, also known as Zambu Htun Thet Lwin, and Aung Chan Lu, also known as Aye Chan Aung, were arrested at their homes. Investigators found they had used social media to endorse false and misleading criticisms by fugitives and supporters of terrorist groups overseas, targeting the election awareness short film “Khit Thamine Ko Done Saing Myi Thu Myar” and its performers.

The investigation revealed the two individuals had not supported the Tatmadaw’s constitutional duties nor contributed to election efforts through their artistic work. Instead, they repeatedly shared fabricated content from media outlets like Khit Thit Media, which are linked to foreign-backed groups opposing national stability. Authorities stated they will face prosecution under the election obstruction law and other applicable criminal statutes. The government urged the public to cooperate in identifying and acting against anyone attempting to undermine the election process.
