Myanmar train tickets online—Viber, QR code chaos
Myanmar’s state railway authority will introduce digital booking and payment capabilities for travelers along the Yangon-Mandalay corridor through a pilot program launching soon. Routes covered under the trial include trains numbered 7 Up/8 Down, 31 Up/32 Down DEMU and 27 Up/28 Down RBE serving Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay stations.
Travelers may reserve seats by telephoning station offices up to five days ahead of departure. Railway personnel confirming availability can accept fares through Viber using mobile wallet applications or MMQR scanning codes. Customers must capture transaction records and transmit them to staff members who processed their reservations. Officials then provide coach assignments and seating details matching requested itineraries.
Passengers still need to reach terminals one hour early to pay at counters and show identification documents when collecting physical tickets. The railway encourages riders to report any instances of inflated charges or unauthorized sales by contacting designated hotline numbers.
