Nepal approves NPR 3 billion for India transmission lines

The Nepali government has approved an equity investment of NPR 3 billion to build two major cross-border transmission lines with India. These lines, the 400 kV Inaruwa–New Purnia and 400 kV Dododhara–Bareilly, will be developed jointly by Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL).

The two countries will set up joint venture companies in Nepal and India, with shared investment. The infrastructure is key to meeting India’s commitment to buy 10,000 MW of electricity from Nepal over the next decade.

The Inaruwa–New Purnia line will be completed by 2028–29, while the Dododhara–Bareilly line is set for 2029–30. Both projects are crucial for enhancing Nepal’s electricity exports, which have already reached NPR 15 billion this fiscal year.
