NHIF budget tosses doctors a fragile raise
Bulgaria’s National Health Insurance Fund supervisory board approved the 2026 budget, which includes provisions setting the minimum monthly pay for young doctors at 1,860 euros. Health economist Arkadi Sharkov told NOVA News that medical costs continue rising globally due to pandemic effects, military conflicts and trade disputes.
Healthcare expenses in Bulgaria have climbed 17 percent since 2021, while general consumer prices have jumped 43 percent, according to figures from the National Statistical Institute. The budget derives revenue from indexed minimum wages and maximum insured income thresholds, which private-sector workers largely fund.
The funding allocated to young physicians and residents may change before implementation next year. Hospital care receives substantially more funding than outpatient services and pharmaceutical programs.
Sharkov warned the budget could require adjustments within three months of 2026 as the deficit grows. Medication prices face strict regulation, though dietary supplements remain unregulated in the market.
