Nicolas Sarkozy freed from jail pending appeal of Libya funds case
A Paris court authorized the release of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy from custody on Monday while he contests his conviction related to illegal campaign financing from Libya. The 69-year-old politician had been imprisoned at La Sante facility since October 21 following a September guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy in obtaining funds from Muammar Gaddafi for his 2007 election campaign.
Judicial authorities determined Sarkozy posed no escape risk, allowing his freedom under supervision that prohibits foreign travel and contact with justice ministry personnel. The conservative leader, who governed from 2007 to 2012, described his three-week incarceration as exhausting during video testimony from prison and pledged cooperation with all court requirements.
Sarkozy faces multiple legal challenges since departing office, including a 2023 corruption conviction that required electronic monitoring and another case involving improper expenditures during his unsuccessful 2012 reelection attempt. The politician maintains his innocence across all proceedings.
