NMS boss calls for 10-year ban for health workers caught stealing medicines
Moses Kamabare, the General Manager of National Medical Stores (NMS), is calling for harsh penalties for health workers found guilty of stealing or diverting government medicines. During a KFM talk show, Kamabare proposed a 10-year ban from practicing medicine for offenders, arguing that stealing government drugs betrays both the public and the profession.
He emphasized that drug theft creates artificial shortages in public health facilities, with stolen medicines often resold in private clinics. Kamabare criticized the current disciplinary measures as too lenient and urged professional councils to update their codes of ethics to reflect the seriousness of the crime. He also called for stronger collaboration between professional bodies, the Ministry of Health, and law enforcement to ensure accountability and restore public trust in Uganda’s healthcare system.
