Onuoha calls Nigeria’s World Cup failure a huge disappointment

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha called Nigeria’s failure to secure an automatic spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup a “huge disappointment.” He admitted that he had planned to block calls from his Ghanaian friends had Nigeria not secured a place in the playoffs after their 4-0 victory over the Benin Republic in Uyo.

Speaking on ESPN, Onuoha expressed his disbelief, saying that the grief from not qualifying would have been immense. He acknowledged that while Nigeria’s qualification for the 48-team tournament is not guaranteed, there is at least some hope. Onuoha noted that it was disappointing for a team like Nigeria, which recently reached the African Nations final, to struggle in the qualifiers. Despite the disappointment, he was relieved that the journey wasn’t over yet.
