Orban launches petition against EU war agenda
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has launched a petition against the EU’s “war agenda,” warning that continued support for Ukraine could lead to direct confrontation with Russia. Speaking at a farmers’ market in Budapest on Saturday, Orban said the EU’s policies are pushing Europe toward war. He criticized Brussels’ stance, calling it a “war plan” that includes supporting Ukraine with unlimited aid, while Hungary should remain neutral.
Orban’s Fidesz party approved the petition to oppose EU war policies, and he urged Hungarians to join the petition and participate in a peace march on October 23. He expressed concern that Europe is rapidly drifting toward war and referenced a recent EU summit in Copenhagen that discussed military aid to Ukraine and plans for an EU “drone wall.”
It is unclear how Orban will use the petition results, but they may be presented at the EU leaders’ summit in late October. Meanwhile, EU member states continue to support aid to Ukraine while increasing defense spending, which Orban and Russia have criticized as escalating the conflict.
