Ovcharov rages at govt over fuel chaos
Former Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov criticized government officials for an inadequate response to Bulgaria’s looming fuel shortage as Lukoil prepares to sell its Burgas refinery. He told Bulgarian National Radio on Wednesday that authorities should verify whether fuel distributors actually maintain the required 90-day reserves rather than conducting media appearances.
Ovcharov urged Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to request sanctions exemptions from the United States, noting Serbia secured eight months of relief despite closer ties to Moscow. He questioned fuel supply sources if refineries in Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia cease operations while sanctions block Russian petroleum imports through Turkey starting next year.
The former minister doubted Greece could meet regional demand and warned that obtaining European Commission approval to access emergency reserves took Hungary seven weeks. He predicted the Burgas facility would be transferred to an established industry operator rather than remain under temporary ownership.
