Patrick Herminie ousts Ramkalawan in Seychelles election

Former Seychelles parliament speaker Patrick Herminie won the presidential run-off against President Wavel Ramkalawan with 52.7 percent of the vote. His victory gives full control of the government back to his United Seychelles party, which also won the majority in parliament last month.

Herminie criticized Ramkalawan’s handling of corruption and pledged to cancel a hotel project seen as harmful to the environment. He also promised to lower the retirement age and address human rights issues from the 1977 coup.

Seychelles, a wealthy island nation, faces challenges like climate vulnerability and drug use. Herminie previously served as speaker from 2007 to 2016.
