Zanu PF’s resolution to extend Mnangagwa’s term unlawful
A year ago, Zanu PF passed Resolution No. 1, which tries to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond what was set by the party’s congress in 2022. This move is both unlawful and goes against Zanu PF’s own rules.
Zanu PF’s congress, held every five years, is the only body that can elect the president. In 2022, it elected Mnangagwa as the candidate for the 2023 elections, for a five-year term. The national conference, which meets yearly, cannot elect a new candidate, only declaring what Congress has already decided.
Resolution No. 1, which tries to extend Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028, is therefore illegal. Zanu PF must follow its own constitution and the national constitution, stopping any attempts to change or subvert these rules.
