Peevski’s party takes charge, voters left powerless
Municipal elections in Pazardzhik have exposed continuing concerns about electoral manipulation and declining public confidence in Bulgaria’s voting system, according to political analyst Ms. Simeonova. The recent local contests marked the first appearance of Delyan Peevski’s faction following the Movement for Rights and Freedoms split, with his group capturing the largest number of council seats. Citizens increasingly distrust the electoral process as authorities fail to address practices that compromise voting integrity, Simeonova said. Lower participation rates amplify the influence of controlled votes and distort outcomes, benefiting established political parties that lack incentive for reform without substantial public pressure.
The GERB party finished sixth in Pazardzhik, suggesting erosion of its political standing as Peevski’s New Beginning movement gradually absorbs its influence. Despite projecting strength, GERB leader Boyko Borisov operates from a subordinate position and consistently serves New Beginning’s interests through his decisions, the analyst noted. Meanwhile, the Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria coalition struggles to maintain its identity after governing alongside its primary rival GERB and informally with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms. That collaboration discredited the reform coalition while rehabilitating parties weakened by 2020 demonstrations. Peevski and Borisov will attempt to marginalize them further, Simeonova predicted.
