Persad-Bissessar refuses to feud with Venezuela VP

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar refused to respond to sharp remarks from Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who claimed Trinidad and Tobago was being led “off a cliff” over the Dragon gas deal. Speaking in Couva on Thursday, Persad-Bissessar said she had received no official message from Caracas and would not trade public accusations. She urged citizens to stay calm amid rising regional tension.

Rodriguez had argued that Trinidad and Tobago needed U.S. permission to buy Venezuelan gas or face economic collapse. She warned local businesses that they must pay for every unit of gas and accused Persad-Bissessar of misleading them. The prime minister called the revived gas agreement a major achievement and said she remained open to talks in Caracas. She dismissed rumors of imminent conflict, stressing her focus on national progress, not political arguments.
