Peru declares state of emergency after deadly protests over crime
Peru’s government announced on Thursday that a state of emergency will be declared in Lima due to weeks of protests against corruption and crime. The decision follows a fatal police shooting on Wednesday that killed 32-year-old rapper Eduardo Ruiz, the first death in the ongoing protests. More than 100 people were injured when clashes broke out near the Congress building.
Protests, driven by frustration over rising crime, have been led by youth, especially in Lima and other cities. After the shooting, Peru’s police chief confirmed that the officer involved would be fired. The unrest began peacefully but turned violent when protesters attempted to breach Congress’s security.
With the country facing a crime wave, interim President Jose Jeri has asked Congress for emergency powers to address the crisis. Young people in Lima held a vigil for Ruiz, expressing anger over the violence and corruption they believe has plagued the country.
