Petkov claims Kremlin cash keeps Serbia’s fuel high

A former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Kiril Petkov, has asserted that high fuel prices in Serbia demonstrate political interference. He stated that the situation involving the Oil Industry of Serbia, or NIS, was clear and recommended using sanctions to gain control of its refinery. Petkov proposed holding an open auction for a Western operator that could provide Serbia with lower fuel prices.

Petkov identified corruption and Kremlin interference as the most significant issues facing the Balkans. He claimed that Russia utilizes culture, education, and propaganda to influence political decisions, aiming to keep regional nations out of the European Union. He alleged that Russians collaborate with corrupt politicians who appear pro-Western but actually advance Russian interests.

Reflecting on his tenure, Petkov mentioned expelling 70 Russian intelligence agents from Bulgaria and ending the country’s complete dependence on Russian energy supplies. He concluded that a lack of political coordination and historical reasons prevent the Balkans from functioning as a unified community.
