Court showdown brews over Bulgaria oil law
The Constitutional Court of Bulgaria has agreed to review a challenge against a recently amended law governing oil and petroleum activities. A group of 51 lawmakers from the 51st National Assembly, with support from the Vazrazhdane, MECH, and Velichye parties, petitioned the court to declare the legislation unconstitutional. The case will be overseen by Judge Orlin Kolev.
The petitioners, led by Kostadin Kostadinov, argue that the amendments represent a state seizure of private property, specifically targeting assets within the Neftochim refinery complex. They contend the law violates constitutional rights to private property and could prompt Lukoil and other firms to file multi-billion leva lawsuits against the state.
Conversely, the ruling GERB and DPS parties and their supporters defend the legislation. They characterize it as a necessary regulatory instrument for overseeing a sector vital to national security.
