PP-DB slams budget as attack on middle class
An opposition coalition called on Tuesday for lawmakers to reject the government’s proposed spending plan and send it back for complete overhaul. Martin Dimitrov, a member of parliament representing Continuing Change-Democratic Bulgaria, told a television audience that the financial blueprint amounts to an assault on working professionals and commercial enterprises. He cautioned officials against advancing the proposal to legislative debate.
Dimitrov criticized several fiscal measures he said would harm households and entrepreneurs. He questioned claims that tax rates would remain unchanged and described higher levies as damaging to enterprise. The representative noted that social insurance contributions would rise by two percentage points, costing typical dual-income families an additional 100 leva monthly. Officials also proposed raising the maximum income subject to such deductions to record levels.
The lawmaker argued that administrators failed to pursue spending reductions or efficiency improvements despite receiving dozens of reform suggestions from his coalition addressing areas such as medical services. Dimitrov said previous budgets carried legitimate justifications but declared current leadership bears full accountability for this proposal.
