Prince Mahmud on music and legacy

Prince Mahmud has shaped Bangladesh music for three decades as a lyricist, composer and director whose 1990s hits remain popular today. The musician created memorable tracks for artists like Ayub Bachchu, James and Hasan while leading the band From West. He told Md Jahidul Islam that listener appreciation drives him to produce fresh material annually rather than financial motives.

The artist began as a vocalist before discovering his true calling in songwriting and composition. His extensive portfolio spans collaborations from Shakti and Khoma in the 1990s through recent film soundtracks. Mahmud credits the bands themselves for revolutionizing the music scene, noting that audiences focused solely on quality until 2009.

The composer took a nine-month break that year, which he considers a career turning point for reflection and renewal. He views current musical trends as a positive evolution in taste and genre diversity. Mahmud advises emerging creators to pursue their genuine musical passions above all else.
