Punjab begins third phase of Afghan deportation plan

The Punjab government in Pakistan kicked off its third phase of deporting illegal Afghan nationals, rounding up 123 more people for deportation. Since April 1, around 42,913 Afghan nationals have been sent back as part of Pakistan’s Illegal Foreigner Repatriation Plan (IFRP). The authorities are targeting those without legal documents or who’ve overstayed their welcome for over a year, housing them in 46 holding centres, including five in Lahore, until they’re sent to the Torkham Border.

The Punjab Police have already deported 21,805 Afghan nationals, with the government intensifying efforts after federal authorities shut down Afghan refugee camps in multiple provinces. The UNHCR raised alarms about the forced expulsion of Afghan refugees, warning it could lead to devastating consequences for vulnerable families, particularly women and girls, facing harsh restrictions under Taliban rule. The agency urged Pakistan to ensure voluntary returns and safeguard the rights of those needing medical care, education, or those in mixed marriages.
