Sri Lankan president attends launch of 60,000-home Indian project

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake showed up on Sunday for the launch of the Indian Housing Project Stage 2 Phase IV. The Indian High Commission revealed that this part of the project includes 4,700 homes, contributing to the goal of 60,000 houses for Sri Lanka. More than 2,000 beneficiaries and their families gathered for the event, with key figures like Ministers, MPs, Governors, and senior officials also in attendance.

The Indian High Commission highlighted that the project, which has already built 50,000 homes, is a significant part of India’s ongoing commitment to support Sri Lanka’s Indian-origin Tamil community. With a budget of over INR 18 billion, the initiative has seen multiple phases since its 2010 launch.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in 2017 further expanded the project, adding 10,000 houses for estate workers. The Indian government has already invested over Sri Lankan Rs 33 billion in this effort.
