Rain abandons Sri Lanka-New Zealand Women’s World Cup match in Colombo

Rain once again disrupted play in Colombo, forcing the Women’s World Cup 2025 match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand to be abandoned without a ball being bowled in the second innings. Both teams were awarded one point each after the game was called off at R. Premadasa Stadium.

This marks the second match of the tournament in Colombo to be abandoned, with Sri Lanka involved in both. The rain delay came just as New Zealand was about to begin their chase, with a heavy downpour halting play for over two hours. A revised 30-over target was set, but the rain returned, forcing the umpires to call off the match.

Earlier, Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss, and captain Chamari Athapaththu led with a fluent half-century. Along with her opening partner, Vishmi Gunaratne, the pair added 101 runs before Athapaththu was dismissed for 53. Gunaratne followed shortly after, making 42.

Sri Lanka’s middle order, led by Harshitha Samarawickrama and Hasini Perera, added 58 runs for the fourth wicket. However, New Zealand fought back with wickets, and Sri Lanka seemed to be losing momentum. Just when things looked bleak, Nilakshika de Silva sparked a counterattack, smashing a rapid 50 from just 26 balls. Her 55* off 28 balls helped Sri Lanka finish strong at 258/6, with 80 runs coming in the last 10 overs.

Sophie Devine led New Zealand’s bowling with figures of 3-54, supported by Bree Illing (2-39) and Rosemary Mair (1-29), though fielding lapses hurt their cause.
