Farmers in Kannauj shift to rose cultivation for better returns
Farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district are increasingly turning to rose cultivation, moving away from traditional crops like wheat and paddy. This shift is driven by better financial returns and the promise of a more prosperous future.
Supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) of India, rose farming has boosted farmers’ incomes and revitalized the district’s famous perfume industry. Kannauj, known as the ‘perfume capital’, offers an ideal climate and soil for growing roses and jasmine, which are key ingredients in perfumes and attars.
Local farmers like Rahul Kushwaha have found that rose cultivation provides higher profits with lower costs compared to traditional farming. Government assistance covering seeds, irrigation, and maintenance ensures financial stability for the farmers. This shift has not only increased incomes but also strengthened the region’s aromatic heritage and created new jobs.
