Rijeka Gateway container terminal redefines Adriatic logistics

The Rijeka Gateway container terminal officially opened on Wednesday, marking a major milestone for Croatia’s logistics sector. Though in technical operation since September 10, the 380 million euro facility is now fully active as the most advanced container terminal in the Adriatic. It positions Rijeka as a key entry point for cargo moving between Asia and Central and Southeastern Europe, serving the Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd AE12/SE1 shipping route.

Operated by APM Terminals and Enna Group, the terminal features 400 meters of shoreline and an annual capacity of 650,000 TEU, expandable to over one million TEU by 2035. It employs more than 300 people and uses cutting-edge technology, including remote-controlled cranes, automated systems, and Croatia’s first industrial private 5G network. Officials stress that unlocking its full potential depends on completing the planned Budapest-Zagreb-Rijeka high-speed rail line. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković confirmed the government’s commitment to that next phase, calling it essential to restoring Rijeka’s historic role as a leading Adriatic port.
