Russian ambassador criticizes Bulgaria’s actions on Lukoil and pension payments
Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova criticized Bulgarian government measures targeting the Burgas refinery as rushed and constitutionally questionable during remarks to state news agency TASS. The diplomat characterized legislation establishing special management authority as property confiscation, noting that shareholders and owners lose decision-making power while appointed administrators operate without judicial oversight. Mitrofanova warned that disruptions at the facility could destabilize fuel supplies as Bulgaria prepares for eurozone entry.
The ambassador also addressed delayed pension payments affecting 6,000 Russian retirees living in Bulgaria since January, following sanctions on banking institutions. Mitrofanova reported that replacement financial channels have been identified and await Bulgarian National Bank approval before the pension fund can resume transfers, expressing confidence that remaining administrative barriers will be resolved quickly.
