Sabah election set for November amid coalition turmoil
The announcement of Sabah’s 17th state election has set the stage for a fierce political battle, with growing tensions among coalitions. The ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition and its federal partner, Pakatan Harapan (PH), are facing internal conflicts as seat negotiations and loyalties shift.
Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) pulled out of GRS, aiming to push a “Sabah for Sabahans” agenda, despite the risk of splitting the local vote. Other tensions include United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) considering contesting under its own logo and Sabah PKR facing backlash over “parachute candidates” with no local ties.
Sabah DAP also faces unrest, with leaders resigning due to internal disputes and disagreements over seat allocations. The election will be held from November 15 to 29, with 1.78 million eligible voters, including military and police personnel.
