SADC seeks $2.1B to transform Southern Africa’s agri-food systems

The Southern African Development Community and the Food and Agriculture Organization plan to raise $2.1 billion for agricultural transformation projects across the region. Officials presented the proposal at the FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment forum in Rome on Monday, and they outlined plans to modernize farming systems through irrigation, mechanization, processing, and trade improvements.

The investment breakdown allocates $600 million to irrigation development, $300 million to mechanization, $400 million to agro-processing, and $800 million to trade facilitation. SADC projects an average 20 percent internal rate of return, and the initiative could benefit 7.8 million people directly and 42.4 million indirectly while raising per capita income by $223.

Regional officials emphasized climate-smart solutions, local value addition through processing, and stronger trade corridors to expand markets within SADC member states. Development finance institutions and investors will participate in follow-up dialogues to finalize project documentation, and technical working groups will conduct due diligence before implementation begins.
