Treasury releases $10M for farmer grain payments
The Grain Marketing Board received $10 million from Treasury to pay farmers for grain deliveries as the summer cropping season begins, and GMB chief executive Edson Badarai announced the disbursement at the Zanu PF conference in Mutare on Sunday. The funds supplement $5 million released two weeks earlier, and the combined amount covers 80 percent of payments owed to farmers in United States currency. GMB purchases grain from contracted Pfumvudza farmers, and the board serves as the buyer of last resort for other producers at preset prices.
Badarai thanked Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka for securing the resources from Treasury, and he praised farmers for their patience in supporting national food security. The government launched 21 initiatives to boost food production, and the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe committed 53 million in local currency plus $66.65 million to finance summer planting. Agricultural advisers reported smooth preparations for the season.
