Zambia, Zimbabwe pivot from Kariba amid drought fears

Zimbabwe and Zambia agreed to seek power sources beyond the Kariba Dam and Zambezi River after climate-induced droughts threatened electricity supplies. Energy ministers July Moyo and Makozo Chikote met in Harare on Monday to address falling water levels in Kariba reservoir. Zambia depends on hydropower for 85 percent of its electricity generation.

Chikote said the nations must expand infrastructure beyond what previous leaders established. Moyo linked energy security to economic growth in mining and agriculture. Zimbabwe produced wheat surpluses for two consecutive years through irrigation systems that require reliable power.

The ministers committed to cooperation on fossil fuels and natural gas development. Chikote connected energy availability to production targets in key economic sectors.
