Salahuddin calls for legal implementation of July charter

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed called for strict adherence to the law when implementing the July Charter, cautioning that steps taken outside constitutional bounds could face future court challenges. He addressed a gathering at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh, where Gono Odhikar Parishad marked its fourth anniversary.

Ahmed said all political parties support the charter, but stressed that an elected parliament must properly enact it. The National Consensus Commission will send recommendations to the government outlining lawful procedures. He rejected emotional appeals for revolutionary decrees, noting the interim government was constitutionally formed under Article 106 and with Supreme Court approval.

The senior leader warned against extra-constitutional actions that might invite legal questions years later. He explained that the next parliament will validate interim government decisions and ratify laws passed, preserving Bangladesh’s constitutional tradition. Ahmed said binding the charter to parliament through sovereign popular consent under Article 7 ensures no legislature can bypass it.

Ahmed urged political forces to maintain the unity that defeated fascism. He said breaking that solidarity risks allowing authoritarian rule to return. The anti-fascist coalition must protect Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty, and democracy while preventing any fascist resurgence.
